Frequently Asked Questions
Are tutoring and mentoring just for struggling students?
The Learning Enhancement Center (LEC) and Mentor and Leadership Development Program (MLDP) are open to all students. Our services not only elevate students' achievements and assist with the transition to academic life, but these services are in place to support high achieving students who want to get the most out of their education and maintain their high standard of achievement. About half of the students using tutoring and mentoring are Dean's list students and half are graduate students.
Do you offer drop-in sessions with tutors and mentors?
The LEC and MLDP prefer that students schedule appointments, but in both offices, students are accommodated as "drop-ins" if there is availability at that time.
What's the difference between a tutor and peer mentor?
The Learning Specialists at the LEC are professionals that have extensive teaching and tutoring experience within their area of expertise. LEC Specialists support students' academic growth through instruction tailored for each student. Peer Mentors in the MLDP are leaders in training that work with students to offer advocacy and powerful peer support throughout their academic careers at MCNY. The LEC Specialists and the MLDP Peer Mentors complement each other in a manner that serves students from many different angles.
As a new student, how can I connect with peers outside of class?
One of the best spaces for peer connection is the MLDP office (room 1253). At the MLDP, students have a safe place to express themselves, meet with seasoned and committed MCNY scholars and share tips, techniques and attitudes for success. Additionally, the MLDP co-sponsors numerous events each semester with the Office of Student Services for fun and engaging student life activities.
Can a tutor or mentor help me navigate my online classes or Moodle?
Both LEC Specialists and MLDP Peer Mentors are knowledgeable in online class, Moodle and IQ Mail protocol. Please feel free to stop by either office for support with online learning. We can help you with access questions as well as strategies for making the most of your online classes.
Where can I find some tips for my academic success and academic skill resources?
Please click on the Learning Resources link for math, writing and APA resources. We also encourage students to connect with MLDP Peer Mentors for academic success and academic skill resources. Please stop by the MLDP office (room 1253) and request a mentor.
