Word Problem Study Guide
The purpose of this study guide is to help students translate words into an algebraic expression or an equation to find a solution. One of the hardest things for most student taking an algebra course is translating the English language into operation signs (+, -), identifying unknown quantities, or assigning letters of the alphabet to represent unknowns.
The study guide will offer some insight such as learning and utilizing key words that translate into math operations to identify unknowns, steps to follow when translating words to an algebraic expression or solving an equation. Students will utilize internet resources as their learning tool.
- TRANSLATE KEY WORDS INTO MATH SYMBOLS
Before the student can attempt a word problem, He/she must be able to identify key words that translate to math operation signs. Available are list of key words that translate tomath symbols.
- STRATEGIES OF SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS
This link provides strategies for tackling word problems.
- COMPUTATION VOCABULARY
Challenge yourself with computation vocabulary by identifying words and their math symbols.
Printable copies are available from the site.
- TRANSLATE WORD PROBLEMS TO AN ALGEBRA EXPRESSION
Translate word problems to an algebraic expression making use of key words. Student should note that algebraic expressions are not equations because they do not carry any equal sign. All equations must have an equal sign. Algebraic expressions are used to form equations. Practice exercises are available.
- WORD PROBLEM WORKSHEETS
Students can download sheets to practice solving word problems. Rules for solving word problems are provided in this links above.
- ALGEBRA WORKSHEETS
Learn how to solve linear equations using one step and multiple steps.
Student will be instructed to generate the worksheets from the site
Example of linear equations: 2x = 10 or 5x + 12 = 2
- PROPORTION INTRODUCTION
Students are introduced to the definition of proportion, parts of the proportion, and ideas how to set up a proportion and solve it.
- PROPORTION WORD PROBLEMS
Lots of exercises available for proportion word problems
