Voices From the Global Village: NEXT Art Gallery installs and opens new art exhibition by Thaddeus Radell: The Will to Remember – A Show About the Layers of MemoryFebruary 13, 2012
The Metropolitan College of New York Media Management MBA program is pleased to announce the opening of The Will to Remember – A Show About the Layers of Memory, featuring the drawings, paintings and reliefs of artist Thaddeus Radell at NEXT Art Gallery, located in the shadow of the Tribeca Film Festival at the college on 431 Canal Street, New York, NY on February 11, 2012. The show will run through March 9, 2012
Founded in the Fall Semester of 2001 by Dr. Faye Ran, Professor of Media, and the MCNY Media Management MBA students in her Arts Administration class, the NEXT Art Gallery was created as a class project focusing on designing a gallery space and mounting an exhibition. NEXT Art Gallery was an immediate success with students, faculty, administration, and members from the surrounding communities both excited by and appreciative of the works shown.
Described as the “sui generis painter of evanescence and the quicksands of loss,” in The Will to Remember – A Show About the Layers of Memory, Radell features painting that have been described as “filled with agitated lines and anonymous, featureless figures. They are almost apparitions, struggling glimpses of painful memories in which there is a visceral, layered effacement of time, of oneself and others.” We see in the paintings “embedded flashes of colors, and the thick impasto of repression, regret and bereavement.”
Born and raised in Michigan, Thaddeus Radell completed his B.F.A. at University of Detroit/Mercy before moving to New York City to study with Leland Bell and Paul Resika at Parsons School of Design. Soon after receiving his M.F.A. in 1982, Radell was offered a position at the Lacoste School of Art and subsequently moved to France where he spent the next fourteen years, dividing his time between his studios in Provence and Paris. Returning to New York City in 2000, he now exhibits and curates regularly in the city and teaches at Pratt Institute, Parsons School of Design and BMCC, CUNY.
Met with such resounding approval and support, it was decided that NEXT Art Gallery would become a permanent feature of the Institution. NEXT Art Gallery has the following goals and objectives:
To encourage the development of traditional and experimental art forms in all mediums.
To support and promote emerging and under-represented artists of all ages and all ethnicities by offering them a central venue in SoHo, an internationally renowned art center, to show their work.
To educate and develop audiences by having innovative art shows and show-related events.
To train future art and cultural industry administrators.
Dr. Ran curates the NEXT Art Gallery year round and mounts new installations each semester with her Arts Administration students. Artists interested in exhibiting in the NEXT gallery are encouraged to submit slides (10 to 20 maximum), a project description and an artist biography.
