Dean's OfficeRuth E. Lugo, Dean Ruth E. Lugo has held the title of Dean of the Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education at Metropolitan College of New York since September 2001. During her twenty years in higher education she has served in senior level, policy making leadership positions in the areas of academic and student affairs. Her contributions to institutional planning, curriculum design, faculty development and institutional assessment have earned her a reputation as a strong advocate for academic excellence, access and diversity. Dr. Lugo has taught courses in Latin American Literature, Hispanic Languages and Literature at La Guardia Community College, William Paterson University, and Montclair State University. In addition, she has participated in postgraduate leadership training at the Institute for Educational Management for Senior University Administrators in the Graduate School of Education and the John F. Kennedy School of Government Executive Program of Public Management (both at Harvard University), The Center for Creative Leadership, and Cornell University’s School for Labor Relations. Her reputation as an educator dedicated to enhance creativity and knowledge is well known nationally and internationally. She has spoken in national and international professional organizations and has been very active with the accreditation process with the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the North East Region and Puerto Rico. Her most recent honors and awards include: Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Member; American Council on Education National Forum for Women in Higher Education; Queens Borough President Citation Award for Community Leadership. She has been chosen as Fellow for the American Council on Education; Leadership America; National Hispana Leadership Institute; Executive Leadership Institute from the League for Innovation in the Community College and the Ford Foundation. Heide Hlawaty (BS, SUNY Stony Brook; M.A., Hunter College; EdD. St. John’s University) Dr. Hlawaty received her BS at SUNY Stony Brook in Biochemistry with an International Studies Minor, MA in Biological Sciences at Hunter College and her EdD in Instructional Leadership at St. John’s University. She taught educational research, brain-based learning, and elementary education science at Georgia College and State University, before returning to New York. Prior to teaching in higher education, she taught high school science for 12 years in Queens and on Long Island and was a Fulbright grantee in Bochum-Langendreer (in North Rhine-Westfalia, Germany). Her research interests include learning styles, science
education, and attitudes regarding queer-identity individuals.
As an Assistant Professor and Chair, Dr. Hlawaty teaches
in the Bachelor of Professional Studies and the Bachelor
of American Urban Studies programs. Dr. Clyde Griffin, Chair for Counseling and Leadership Development (V-VIII) Dr. Clyde Griffin is currently chair of Counseling and Leadership Development at Metropolitan College of New York (formerly Audrey Cohen College). He originally joined the College in 1983 as a fulltime faculty member. He holds an undergraduate degree in Romance languages and literature from Ohio State University, a masters in English as a second language, and a doctorate in linguistics and education from Teachers College, Columbia. His doctoral work included interdisciplinary studies in family literacy, therapist/client communication, and the design and implementation of teacher training programs. Before coming to MCNY, Dr. Griffin taught in Nigeria as a Peace Corps Volunteer. He taught both English and French and also developed a community library and a local network of medical professionals. On his return to this country, he spent ten years teaching in independent schools, whose function is to prepare students for elite colleges in the United States. He was chairman of the foreign language department and taught courses in French, Spanish, Italian, and German as well as in English literature and the humanities. As chairman, he was responsible for all administrative matters concerning the department as well as being responsible for the academic integrity of the program, which included the training of new teachers. Immediately before beginning his career at Metropolitan College, he was a teacher trainer and part-time coordinator of the ESL program at Teachers College, Columbia. At Metropolitan College, Dr. Griffin has been responsible for developing curriculum in self-assessment, groups, teaching, counseling, managing change, and in the liberal arts. He has also served as the director of the Advanced Standing Program, a program that awards college credit to students for their work experience and learning in the field. During his tenure at the College, Dr. Griffin has, in addition
to teaching, worked in the field of human service to develop
programs for abused and neglected adolescents. The program
in which he worked at Edwin Gould Academy has become a national
model for working with disturbed youth and has been recognized
by both the Ford Foundation and the Harvard Graduate School
of Education. This field experience has been vital to Dr.
Griffin's effectiveness as a teacher at Metropolitan College,
a college that prides itself on the integration of theory
and practice. Patrick Ianniello, Director of the Master of Science Degree in Education program Dr. Patrick Ianniello has served as a principal, an assistant principal and an elementary school teacher in New York City Public Schools for 34 years. He has extensive experience in the professional development and evaluation of teachers, planning and implementing best practices in the elementary school curriculum and integrating technology in classrooms. He received his doctorate in educational communication and technology at New York University.
