Message From the Dean

As MCNY's School for Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) surges towards the next 25 years of preparing graduate students for public service, I am profoundly humbled and honored to have been a part of the school's commitment to excellence and its overarching challenge that our graduates be committed to improving the lives of citizens served in many of the marginalized communities that represent our student body.

Over the next 25 years, I look forward to seeing the program cement its academic gains, further strengthen its curriculum and expand its service to the citizens of New York City. As a prospective student, this is a legacy and tradition of which you can become a part. The Master of Public Administration (MPA) program will challenge you to be a problem solver, policy analyst and an engaged citizen of New York City's dynamic metropolitan area.

The program will challenge you academically. You will be required to write a thesis, called the "Constructive Action," that will identify a real need or opportunity in your organization and, through scholarly research, propose a meaningful intervention. This intervention will have to have the potential to improve the lives of the citizens that you and your organization serve. This is the foundation of our academic model.

The SPAA houses the unique MPA in Emergency and Disaster Management program and the undergraduate programs in Emergency Management and Business Continuity. These are, in many ways, degree offerings that are ahead of their time and this speaks to the standards, expectations and trajectory of the school as a whole.
