How?

By having your cheek swabbed and enrolling in a Bone Marrow Registry.  A bone marrow transplant can mean the difference between life and death for the 43,000 people diagnosed each year with leukemia.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Minorities are vastly underrepresented in the bone marrow registries, which means the chance of finding a life saving match is dramatically smaller.  You can sign up to be a bone marrow donor on November 15.  What are you doing that day that is more important than potentially saving a life?

MCNY will be co-hosting a Bone Marrow Donor Registration Drive on Monday, November 15th, 2010, with “Preserve Our Legacy,” a nonprofit founded by MCNY alum Shana Melius.

All it takes to save a life is a swab inside your cheek and a little paperwork. “Signing up is simple, but a serious commitment.  Donating is relatively painless, contrary to popular belief. And if the transplant succeeds, the results are astonishing,” wrote Melinda Beck in a Wall Street Journal article.   “A small amount of donated bone marrow, about 5% of the donor’s total, can not only replenish a leukemia patient’s diseased supply but the donated cells also seek out and destroy any remaining cancer cells and then keep growing.”
