Ernie Anastos is a legendary figure in the world of journalism and broadcasting. As a celebrated host and creator of “Positively America,” he brings positive news and inspiring stories to a national audience. His radio presence on 77 WABC continues to inform and entertain listeners with engaging interviews and valuable information.

Ernie’s illustrious career has seen him as a leading anchor at major New York TV stations, such as WABC-TV, WCBS-TV, and WNYW-TV. His work spans decades, during which he has covered major news stories that have shaped history, from the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks to the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic. He has also reported from Cuba on Fidel Castro’s reign and interviewed numerous world leaders.

Ernie’s academic accomplishments are equally impressive. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Northeastern University and holds Honorary Doctorate degrees from several institutions. His pursuit of education continued at Harvard Business School, where he focused on leadership and management strategy.

As an Emmy Award winner, Ernie has been honored with more than 30 Emmys, including the prestigious Lifetime Emmy Award. His accolades also include the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, New Yorker of the Year, and many others.

In addition to his journalism career, Ernie is an accomplished media executive, owning FM and AM radio stations and leading his own television production company. He has also authored inspiring books for young readers.

Ernie Anastos remains a respected and influential voice in media, continually contributing to the betterment of society through his work and dedication.

2024 MCNY Impact Award Honorees

Greta R. Strong, EdD, MPA’04, MSc, BBA’02

Dr. Greta R. Strong is a distinguished educator and community leader. She serves as an Assistant Professor of Community Outreach Teaching in the Department of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College, where she chairs the Committee for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging. Dr. Strong is also a registered Stroke Advocate with the National Stroke Association and directs the “Hope for Stroke” support group. In collaboration with the New York State Commission on Human Rights, she serves as Course Director for Bystander Intervention Training.

Beyond her work at Weill Cornell, Dr. Strong holds multiple academic roles. She is a Dissertation Committee Chair and Member in the Doctor of Education Program at St. John Fisher University and an Adjunct Professor in the Master of Public Administration Program at Metropolitan College of New York. Additionally, she teaches courses in pastoral counseling and leadership in church ministry at the WorldWide Christian Leadership Academy.

Dr. Strong’s community involvement is extensive. She is a board member and advisor to several grassroots organizations, including the Vitiligo Bond Foundation, Ajalon International Charity Organization, and Making the Impossible Possible. These organizations focus on improving the lives of individuals in the New York Metropolitan area, Nigeria, and Haiti. The Vitiligo Bond Foundation supports people living with vitiligo, Ajalon International Charity Organization assists Nigerian college students, and Making the Impossible Possible helps immigrant youth and their families.

Her dedication to community service extends to her role as a Senior Advisor/member of the WorldWide Global Medical Missions. This organization provides health and wellness support to communities facing severe medical and staffing crises globally. Dr. Strong also serves on the MCNY Wellness Committee, addressing the wellness of its internal and external constituents, particularly focusing on the Black Maternal Health Crisis. Black birthing individuals face significantly higher maternal mortality rates than their white peers, a disparity Dr. Strong is committed to addressing.

Dr. Strong’s efforts in education include co-chairing a staff-led initiative within the Office of Staff Diversity, Inclusion, and Engagement to develop the Exploring Careers in Healthcare Opportunities Summer Program. This program introduces high school students from underserved communities to various career paths in healthcare, providing them with essential skills, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

From 2022 to 2024, Dr. Strong served on the Digital Equity Community Advisory Board of the SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, School of Public Health. This board is a community-academic partnership aiming to develop a novel, community-centered digital solution for stroke care.

Her international work includes co-chairing committees on domestic violence and climate change with The Women’s Round Table Action Platform of Trinidad and Tobago. This platform connects, engages, and empowers women globally through mentorship, education, networking, and advocacy.

Dr. Strong’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including the United States Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for Community Service, the National Medal of Honor for Inspiring Initiative, and the Weill Cornell Medicine’s Pioneers in Diversity Award. She is a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, the Honor Society of the National Society for Public Affairs and Administration, and Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education.

Through her multifaceted roles, Dr. Greta R. Strong exemplifies dedication to education, community service, and global health, making significant impacts in every area she touches.

Michael J. Garner, MBA

Michael J. Garner, MBA, was appointed New York City’s first Citywide Chief Business Diversity Officer by Mayor Eric Adams on February 16, 2023. Previously, he served as the Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) of New York State for 14 years, from February 2009 to February 2023. Garner is a dedicated diversity champion with a personal and professional mission to foster a more inclusive business environment.

Throughout his career, Garner has significantly influenced New York City and the State’s legislative laws and created innovative MWDBE (Minority, Women, Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) and SDVOB (Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Business) programs. His efforts, along with his teams at the City of New York, the MTA, and the New York City School Construction Authority (SCA), have facilitated over $23 billion in payments to Minority and Women-owned Businesses. At the MTA, he increased the hiring of Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians by 20% across its six operating agencies.

Garner designed the leading Small Business Construction Mentoring Program in the country, which has transformed North America’s largest transportation system. This program has awarded 575 contracts totaling $620 million to its participants. Overall, Garner’s initiatives have resulted in over $17.3 billion paid to New York State-certified MWBEs during his tenure at the MTA.

As an influential industry and community leader, Garner has made a significant impact on the MWDBE/SDVOB Business Community in New York State and City. His expertise is recognized nationally, making him a sought-after speaker and advisor on effective MWDBE Programs across various U.S. cities and states, including Buffalo, Chicago, and New Jersey. He has also served in numerous executive advisory roles, including:

Michael J. Garner brings extensive experience in M/WBE programming, a vast network of advocates, and a proven track record to his role as New York City’s first Citywide Chief Business Diversity Officer.

David Schwartz

David SchwartzDavid Schwartz is a co-founder and principal of Slate Property Group. He has over twenty years of experience buying, developing, and operating real estate across the United States. He currently runs all development and construction projects for Slate Property Group and shares responsibility for all acquisitions and investment decisions.

David also leads Slate’s impact investing with a focus on affordable housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Slate is the leader in housing for low-income and formerly homeless individuals and families in New York City. Slate partners with the leading non-profits in New York City, including Women in Need, Project Renewal, Bowery Resident Committee, Westham and many others.

Slate has developed and invested in over $6 billion in real estate. Slate is developing over $2 billion in real estate throughout New York City, representing over 2,000 apartments, and has a portfolio valued at over $3 billion. Slate’s partners have included the Carlyle Group, AEW Capital Management, The Baupost Group, Fortress and many others.

Prior to Slate Property Group, David co-founded two New York City based development firms. He was responsible for the development of over 1,000 units throughout New York City, representing over 750,000 square feet. Prior to founding his own development firms, David worked for Crescent Heights of America, where he was involved in over $500M in ground-up residential developments representing over 1,000 units. Throughout David’s career, he has been involved in the development of almost $5 billion in real estate. Prior to Crescent Heights of America, David worked at Lux Capital and J.P. Morgan.

David currently serves on the boards of the Furman Center at New York University, the Citizens Housing Planning Council, the New York State Association for Affordable Housing, The Center for Community Alternatives, The Brooklyn Hospital Center, the Kuhn Real Estate Center at Syracuse University and Horizons at Brooklyn Friends School.   David and his wife Haley are also very involved in Hudson River Park and served as the Capital Campaign Co-Chair for the Pier 26 Science play area capital campaign. David Schwartz received his B.S. in finance from Syracuse University.

In support of MCNY’s mission to provide a superior, experientially based education and promote social justice, the Power of Purpose Social Impact Awards serves as MCNY’s annual fundraising luncheon. The event recognizes individuals who embody, in both person and deed, the essence of purpose and service to our community. Funds raised will support scholarships for students with financial need as they pursue their degrees with the goal of effecting positive change in their workplaces and communities.
