Thursday, November 14th – Panel Discussion to Address Local Community’s Concerns and How Policy Will Be Handled in Mayor-Elect Bill de Blasio’s Administration
WHAT: The Bronx Extension Center of Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) will host a fall Urban Dialogue panel discussion on New York City Police Department’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy and mass incarceration. The stop-and-frisk policy disproportionately affects minorities and was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge, although an appeals court blocked that order. Still, it doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. MCNY’s Urban Dialogue series is part of the College’s mission to advance the cause of social justice and Purpose-Centered Education.
“Urban Dialogues”, offered by the College’s School for Public Affairs and Administration, provides a forum in which scholars, legislators, policy makers, students, and citizens can exchange ideas and discuss issues and trends that affect New York City and other urban centers across the nation.
WHO: Panelists include: Darius Charney, senior staff attorney in the Racial Justice/Government Misconduct Docket, currently lead counsel on Floyd v. City of New York, a federal civil rights class action lawsuit challenging the New York Police Department’s unconstitutional and racially discriminatory stop-and-frisk practices; Glenn E. Martin, Vice President of Public Affairs and Director of the David Rothenberg Center for Public Policy at The Fortune Society, responsible for leading the agency’s communications work as well as developing and advancing Fortune’s national and local criminal justice policy advocacy agenda; and Adeola Ogunkeyede, Esq., supervising attorney, Bronx Defenders. The panel will be moderated by Dean Humphrey Crookendale, Dean of the School of Public Affairs for Metropolitan College of New York.
