Determined and Dedicated — Shawana Singletary, MBA, is ready to take on her new role as Director of Admissions and Recruitment at Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY).
Please join us in congratulating our former Director of Admissions Processing and Systems, as she begins her new role effective October 1, 2020. With 13 years of experience in higher education admissions and recruitment, nearly 5 years at MCNY, Singletary has climbed the ladder of success through hard work, resiliency and a positive attitude.
“Shawana’s spirit and enthusiasm for MCNY and her ability to create solutions and make decisions is undeniable,” said Amy Greenstein, Vice President of Enrollment Services and Students Affairs who joined MCNY earlier this year at the height of the pandemic, “She has been instrumental in bringing change to MCNY, most notably in creating a seamless process for students that will strengthen our potential to recruit and enroll.”
Singletary is the first Black woman to be appointed to the position of Director of Admissions and Recruitment at MCNY. This is particularly meaningful to her because “Representation matters! Education as a whole needs greater diversity in leadership and school culture, from Pre-K to higher ed.” She sees herself as a role model who understands the colleges’ uniqueness as a predominantly black institution that serves adult students at a 60/40% ratio of female to male. She is forward-thinking in her planning and approach to recruiting the smart, talented, hardworking students that are the legacy of MCNY.
“Since arriving at MCNY in 2016, I’ve been able to connect with and empower our student population to use their educational experiences to create a better future for themselves and their families,” says Shawana Singletary, “I’m very proud of the work that I’ve done thus far and am excited about the future.”
Singletary is also a certified professional life coach. She states it was a natural fit, “I love to see people win! I empower women 17-40 to take the next steps in their lives to achieve success, balance and happiness. We all want to be happy, and successful; we sometimes just don’t know how to get there. It is in my nature to be encouraging.” And it is, indeed, as Shawana uses her training and encouraging words to inspire the MCNY Admissions Team and colleagues.
Shawana Singletary is born and raised in Brooklyn with Costa Rican roots. She holds a BA in Psychology from CUNY Medgar Evers College and an MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management of DeVry University. She is the proud mother of two amazing 11-year old twins, Jalil and Kaliyah.
