Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) seeks an assistant professor of human services with administrative responsibilities to support the ongoing impact of its unique curricular model, Purpose-Centered Education, MCNY is a non-profit, regionally accredited college offering associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees, with state-of-the art campuses in the Financial District of Manhattan and the South Bronx hub district.

In addition to teaching in our Human Services program, the Assistant Professor of Human Services will play an important role in working with faculty and staff to strengthen our delivery of the culminating projects, called Constructive Actions, that are at the heart of PCE. In Constructive Action projects, students integrate the theoretical, “dimensional” knowledge gained that semester into projects that aim to improve programs or services at their workplaces or field placement sites. Students’ field placements in human services organizations are an important element of CA projects, and as the college has grown, and student attendance patterns have changed, it has been a challenge to assure the appropriate scheduling and alignment of courses for every student, and to support appropriate field placements. As the administrative component of this position, which comprises 50% of the position’s responsibilities, this position will work with faculty and staff to design course schedules that enable the alignment of courses with each’s semester’s competency, and to help assure appropriate field placements.
The individual filling this position will
- Be a full-time member of the faculty of the college’s Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education (ACSHSE),
- Be assigned to two course sections every term,
- Review issues related to curricular alignment and make recommendations for improving all students’ experience of PCE
- Provide ongoing faculty development to assure faculty understand the performative nature of each course and how the dimensions relate to the purpose and CA
- Improve field experiences
- Join with program directors and other full-time members of the faculty in developing, governing and implementing the college’s human services degree programs,
- Participate in activities related to the recruitment of new students and the retention of currently enrolled students,
- Advise currently enrolled students regarding their plans for their educations and careers, and
- Actively engage in the continuing development of the ACSHSE.
- Familiarity with and a commitment to the college’s model of education
- Demonstrated commitment to social justice
- Experience working with students and citizens from the communities served by the college – particularly individuals of color and adult students
- Experience in guiding students to use their knowledge and skills to achieve a purpose that makes a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others
- Experience working with the types of not-for-profit organizations, government agencies, and/or businesses that provide field placements for the college’s students
- Proven skills as a teacher
- Proven skills as a trainer and facilitator of teachers
- Knowledge of the bodies of knowledge and theory represented in the college’s human services programs.
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary approaches to human services education
- A doctoral degree in a human services discipline is preferred; master’s degrees may be considered
