Doctor Bob Lee stands out as a prominent figure in both radio and our local community. His distinctive voice resonates across the airwaves, making him one of the most recognizable voices on 107.5 WBLS-FM and Hot 97 WQHT-FM, where he provides essential news and community updates spanning the entire tri-state area. Beyond his radio commitments, Doctor Bob’s dedication to our community is evident in the active role he plays in the non-profit world. Additionally, he extends his influence to the television screen as the host of the engaging TV show “Open,” which airs on BronxNet. His multifaceted involvement underscores his commitment to informing and engaging our community in issues of social justice, education and health equity.

Dr. Bob Lee, also known as “Doctor Bob Lee,” has had a remarkable journey, blending a passion for music with a strong commitment to community service. His story is one of resilience and determination, overcoming challenges to achieve success and give back to the community. Here’s a brief overview of his journey:

Dr. Bob Lee earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in Communications from New York Institute of Technology, and he later obtained his Doctorate of Community Ministries (D.Cm.) degree at the New Seminary for Interfaith Studies.

He founded the Make the Grade Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to mentoring and supporting school children. This organization fosters academic achievement by promoting collaboration between parents, teachers, students, clergy, and the community.

His early experiences growing up in an inner-city environment included encounters with law enforcement and challenges, but he found an opportunity as a disc jockey at neighborhood parties, which sparked his interest in music and community involvement.

The nickname “Doctor” was given to him during his youth, stemming from his curiosity about how life works after a visit to a doctor’s office.

Dr. Bob Lee’s involvement in sports, particularly amateur boxing, taught him the importance of preparedness and dedication to success.

His career in music and community service took off, and he became a well-known figure in the radio industry, working at WBLS and hosting programs that encouraged education and community engagement.

He has published several books, including “People to Know in Black History – Honoring the Heroes and Sheroes Who Make the Grade – Volume 2,” along with other titles focusing on community success and wisdom.

Dr. Bob Lee continues to be active in various roles, including motivational speaking, consulting, and mentoring college students interested in radio careers.

His dedication to building a better future for today’s youth is a central theme throughout his career.

Dr. Bob Lee is a unique and influential figure, known for his contributions to the community and his impact in the fields of music, radio, and education.

The Power of Purpose Awardees

Receiving the MCNY Social Impact Award…

Larry Scott Blackmon is the CEO of the Blackmon Organization, his public affairs and lobbying consulting firm.

Larry formerly served as the Vice President for Public Affairs at FreshDirect, building on FreshDirect’s existing community and charitable partnerships across various issues, including fighting hunger, nutrition education and career development. He has 20 years of public service, community development and government experience. Larry joined FreshDirect from the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, where he served as the Deputy Commissioner for Community Outreach.

Larry is a former candidate for New York City Council and has worked with many of New York City’s elected officials, serving in the administrations of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Additionally, he has worked with many federal and state representatives, serving on US Senator Charles Schumer’s staff and former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton during her 2000 Senate campaign.

Larry served as Senior Manager of Public Affairs for the New York Jets of the National Football League. He was instrumental in developing a landmark Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (M/WBE) agreement for the New York Sports and Convention Center (NYSCC). While the NYSCC was not developed, the M/WBE agreement served as a blueprint for many other development projects.

Larry earned a BA in Communications and Black Studies from the State University of New York College at New Paltz. He holds a Master’s in Public Administration from Metropolitan College of New York and is a Harvard University graduate of the John F. Kennedy School’s Executive Leadership program. He is also a graduate of Northwestern University’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certificate program and an alum of the Coro Leadership New York program.

As a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, the first Black Greek Letter Organization established in the United States, Larry is president of the New York Association of Chapters of Alpha statewide organization. During 2021 – 2023, Larry served as the Fraternity’s “Alumni Brother of the Year.” He is the current board chair of the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan New York and sits on the Board of Directors of 100 Black Men of New York as secretary. Larry is the immediate past president of the New York Association of Parliamentarians, an organization dedicated to teaching Parliamentary Procedure and Robert’s Rules of Order.

For 2016 – 2021, Larry was recognized as one of the “50 Most Powerful Bronx Community Leaders” and has been named one of the “40 Under 40” people to watch by both the Network Journal and City and State New York publications.

Larry Scott Blackmon served as a substitute professor for former New York City Mayor David Dinkins and taught classes at the Mayor’s Public Affairs course at Columbia University. As a professor at Metropolitan College of New York, Larry taught Intergovernmental Relations, Non-Profit Management and Marketing, Collaborative Leadership and Introduction to Public Administration classes.

American Cancer Society co-hosted and helped organize the first annual “Harlem Cares Prostate Cancer Awareness Walk”.

Receiving the MCNY Social Impact Award…

Gary P. Jenkins is the Managing Director of Not-for-profits and Social Services at Oaktree Solutions.

Gary was appointed by Mayor Eric Adams in January of 2022 as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Social Services (DSS), which oversees both the Human Resources Administration (HRA) and Department of Homeless Services (DHS). In this capacity, he was responsible for leading the largest local social services agency in the country. HRA serves over 3 million New Yorkers through the administration of major public assistance programs and strives to combat poverty and income inequality in New York City. DHS is the largest municipal shelter system in the nation and works to prevent homelessness when possible, address street homelessness, provide safe temporary shelter, and connect New Yorkers experiencing homelessness to suitable housing. Together, DSS-HRA-DHS have a combined staff headcount of nearly 15,000 and a combined operating budget of nearly $13 billion.

‍‍Gary received his Master’s in Public Administration from Metropolitan College of New York in 2006 and his bachelor’s degree from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in 1999.

Gary’s 30-plus-year history with DSS-HRA-DHS began with a front-line position in HRA, where he rose through the ranks to become Administrator of HRA, eventually reaching the organization’s pinnacle when he was appointed to serve as Commissioner of DSS. During his tenure as Commissioner, he led the agency’s response to multiple crises, including the COVID-19 public health emergency and a humanitarian crisis when thousands of asylum seekers entered the DHS shelter system.

‍In addition to HRA Administrator, Jenkins previously served as HRA First Deputy Commissioner, where he oversaw HRA’s Homelessness Prevention Administration (HPA), Career Services, the Office of Child Support Services, and the Fair Fares program. Prior to that, he served as Executive Deputy Commissioner of the Family Independence Administration, where he was responsible for and oversaw the administration of temporary cash assistance, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, and employment services for HRA clients.

Dr. Jocelynne Rainey is the President and CEO of  Brooklyn Community Foundation.

Dr. Rainey is a seasoned executive with over 20 years of executive leadership experience in the New York City nonprofit sector. Dr. Rainey joined Brooklyn Community Foundation as President & CEO in December 2021 at an exciting moment of growth and opportunity. She oversees the development of strategic initiatives, innovative programs, and community-centered philanthropic services that embody the Foundation’s deep commitment to racial justice while furthering its mission to spark lasting social and economic change for Brooklyn communities and beyond.

Before joining the Foundation, Dr. Rainey served as CEO and President of Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO), a leading citywide nonprofit serving justice-involved individuals. At GOSO, she oversaw programming which has helped more than 10,000 young men access education, achieve emotional well-being, and secure meaningful employment since its advent. GOSO’s innovative workforce development program, GOSOWorks, has placed hundreds of justice-involved young men in paid internships and permanent jobs in numerous growth industries in the New York metropolitan area.

Previously, Dr. Rainey was Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer for the Brooklyn Navy Yard (BNY), leading workforce development, administration, security, and human resource strategies for the organization. She established impactful partnerships to connect underserved communities in Brooklyn with career opportunities in the Yard’s growing industries, eliminating barriers to employment for disadvantaged populations. During her eight years at BNY, Dr. Rainey increased workforce placements as well as the number of minority- and women-owned businesses that secured procurement contracts with the Yard. She was an integral part of the team that created the innovative STEAM Center Department of Education High School Program, a program located at BNY that exposes high school students to manufacturing and tech careers. Dr. Rainey also increased organization-wide DEI initiatives during her time at the Yard.

Prior to her tenure at BNY, Dr. Rainey was the Human Resources Director for specialty food retailer  Agata and Valentina. She has also held senior positions at the Independent Living Association, Home Depot, and Boar’s Head.

A graduate of Southern Connecticut State University, Dr. Rainey holds a master’s in administration from Metropolitan College and a doctorate in Executive Leadership from St. John Fisher College.

Jocelyyne on Brooklyn Street

Admiring her community, Jocelynne is woven into the fabric of Brooklyn’s rejuvenation.

She is a member of several boards, including the New York City Workforce Development, Brooklyn Navy Yard, and Mark Morris Dance Group. She is also a trustee of the foundations of both her alma mater, Southern Connecticut State University and New York College of Technology. Dr. Rainey is the recipient of several prestigious honors, including being named one of The Network Journal’s 25 Influential Black Women in Business in 2016 and one of Crain’s Notable Black Leaders and Executives in 2021 and 2023.
