New Multipurpose Space to Expand Capacity and Program Offerings and Revitalize South Bronx’s Hub Shopping Area

Triangle Metropolitan College Board Presentation 5-23-2013New York, N.Y. (April 6, 2016) – Beginning in the late summer 2016, Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) will grow its footprint in the Bronx with the opening of a 26,000 sq. ft. state of the art facility with the capacity to serve over 500 students. Located at 463 East 149th Street, the new site is part of the development of Triangle Plaza Hub, a mixed commercial project that is a centerpiece of redevelopment in the Hub shopping area at the second busiest subway stop in the Bronx.

MCNY Bronx will feature seventeen classrooms, three computer labs and a multipurpose conference space that will allow the college to host large events to make it an integral part of the local community. The new facility will include public assembly spaces that will allow the college to host unique programs on site and provide unprecedented opportunities for MCNY students to interact with the community.

“MCNY Bronx is designed with students and the greater community in mind,” said MCNY President Dr. Vinton Thompson. “It is my hope that our Bronx site will serve as a magnet to the community that will benefit both the community at large and students.

MCNY will be part of the ongoing economic development in the South Bronx, an economically distressed area that is rebounding after decades of decline. With MCNY Bronx serving as an anchor, the Triangle Plaza Hub facility has already attracted a grocery store and a restaurant. Other businesses will be eager to locate nearby to take advantage of hundreds of students coming and going on a daily basis.

MCNY Bronx will create permanent jobs for faculty members, administrators and support staff.   It will also help to contribute to the development of the South Bronx workforce as graduates from neighboring areas work in and invest in their own community.

“The opening of MCNY Bronx demonstrates our long-term commitment to the South Bronx Community and its renaissance. The new space establishes a strong community presence that is truly transformational for a college of our size and history,” Dr. Thompson added.
