Hot 97 Radio personality, TT Torrez talks about her student experience in the MCNY School for Business at Metropolitan College of New York.
“What drives me? It is the inspiration from my family and close friends, the determination to be my own boss and the motivation to better myself and make a life change.”
Social justice and community activism have always had a role in Torrez’s life. These are some of the reasons that made MCNY a great fit for her when pursuing opportunities to advance her degree. As a role model, she is so much more than her career at New York’s number one hip hop station HOT 97/WQHT-FM and host of the Culture List on BET’s Centric. She takes her community work seriously. She has been a guest speaker for “Girls Talk 2016” at Hofstra University, which provided workshops, panels, and classes geared towards women safety and empowerment, and a part of Windows of HipHop 2017’s Hip Hop Element Awards, which honored people in music who have promoted the Bronx born phenomena, known as HipHop, and advanced the culture forward into the future by instilling in our youth civic-mindedness and giving back to the community.
TT Torrez began her professional radio career in Charlotte, NC at WCHH Hot 92.7 as a part-time radio host. Then, Torrez moved further south to WSSP Power 94.3 in Charleston, SC as a midday personality and producer of the now, nationally syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show. It wasn’t long before TT would venture into television. For four years, she traveled for Music Choice, writing, producing, and interviewing celebrities. At the same time, she held weekend radio shifts on the legendary WUSL Power 99 in Philadelphia. Torrez worked full-time as the afternoon personality and Music Director for WCDX iPower 92.1 in Richmond, VA before moving to New York’s HOT 97.
Given her humble beginnings, TT ensures that she makes time to give back. Her successful “Pink Birthday Party” charity event benefiting breast cancer research received national attention. TT Torrez also founded the “I Will Wait Until I Graduate” campaign encouraging young women to graduate high school before becoming parents. She received the “Best Community Service” award from the VA Association of Broadcasters for her “Prom-A-Thon” campaign that provided over 500 girls with prom dresses, make-up, and hair to attend their high school prom.
Business is business and when TT Torrez gets down to business, everyone takes note! TT juggles several media ventures of her own and is frequently featured by The Source, Star, and VIBE magazines, Nancy Grace, Entertainment Tonight, and Access Hollywood, as well as a number of blog sites. Some of her most notable interviews include DJ Khaled, Quentin Tarantino, P. Diddy, Rick Ross, and 50 Cent. Torrez is highly regarded and sought after for her coverage of red carpet events such as the MTV VMA’s, BET Awards, BET Hip Hop Awards, and the Grammys. One might ask, “How did TT find time to complete her business degree?”
“The accelerated business program allowed me to attend full-time and continue in a full-time career. Even during the pandemic, the support of our professors helped get us through,” said TT Torrez, “A business degree was always in my future. All the stars aligned when I applied at MCNY.”
Please join us in congratulating one of our shining stars, 4.0 GPA and Delta Mu Delta Honor Society Inductee, TT Torrez on her achievement — Bachelor of Business Administration!
