November 12, 2024 – New York, NYMetropolitan College of New York (MCNY) is honored to announce that it has been awarded a $748,311 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to establish a Veterans Center of Excellence. MCNY is one of only 13 institutions nationwide to receive this competitive grant, which will provide essential support for veteran students over the next three years.

The funding will enable MCNY to offer comprehensive services tailored to the unique needs of veterans, addressing financial, physical, mental health and social support to enhance their success as they pursue their degrees. This initiative also includes resources for outreach and recruitment, ensuring that veteran students across the region are aware of the expanded support network being offered by MCNY as a result of the grant.

“Following Veterans Day, we honor those who have honorably served our country with distinction, and this grant allows us to further support them in their career aspirations and educational journeys,” said President Charles J. Gibbs of MCNY. “With this funding, MCNY can deepen its commitment to supporting veteran students, providing them with the resources they need to thrive academically, professionally, and personally. It is our privilege to give back through this program. We are eternally grateful to the Department of Education for recognizing the value of MCNY and choosing us for this competitive grant.”

MCNY’s Veterans Center of Excellence is set to provide targeted services and resources that address veterans’ educational needs, creating a supportive environment that fosters academic success and well-being. Plans are underway to roll out the program’s services, which will include hiring veteran support staff, providing dedicated mental health resources, and creating comprehensive wellness initiatives. This grant aligns with the Department of Education’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families.

MCNY’s Veterans Center of Excellence aligns with national efforts and the College’s mission: to provide a superior, experientially-based education that fosters personal and professional development, promotes social justice, and encourages positive change in workplaces and communities.
