NEW YORK, NY- JUNE 9, 2010 Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) is working with New York City Councilmember Mathieu Eugene to promote MCNY’s 6 full tuition scholarships to Haitian citizens for its Master’s of Public Administration in Emergency and Disaster Management.  In support of the rebuilding of Haiti following the devastating earthquake, MCNY wants to do its part by giving qualified Haitian citizens the opportunity to acquire the skills needed to help their country during this difficult time.  This unique scholarship program will cover all tuition, books and fees as well as offer a “hands on” off-site learning component in Haiti.  The announcement of MCNY’s Haitian Scholarship program will be made at a press conference on Tuesday, June 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the Steps of City Hall (at the corner of Broadway and Murray Street) in New York City.

“MCNY’s Master’s of Public Administration in Emergency and Disaster Management is designed to equip people in public service with the essential executive and analytical skills necessary to be effective leaders,” explains Vinton Thompson, President of Metropolitan College of New York.  “The scholarship opportunity that we are offering to Haitian citizens we hope will allow us to do our part in helping to rebuild the country and help citizens presently affected by the crisis.”

MCNY’s 16-Month Master’s of Public Administration in Emergency and Disaster Management is a highly specialized degree that covers planning, management, logistics, response, relief, recovery and economics associated with managing emergency situations.  Examples of classes within this program include the “Economics of Hazards and Disasters,” “Public Health Systems and Preparedness, “Terrorism and Disaster Management” and Organizational and Municipal Continuity Planning.” The scholarship program will also incorporate MCNY’s Constructive Action curriculum that works to develop a “hands on” comprehensive emergency management experience and plan that can be adapted and implemented in Haiti.

“On my behalf and on behalf of the Haitian community, I would like to thank Metropolitan College for offering this very important scholarship program to Haitian students with a focus on emergency and disaster management,” states New York City Councilmember Mathieu Eugene. “I believe this opportunity is paramount to Haiti’s reconstruction and preparedness for prospective natural disasters.”

MCNY’s current graduates of its Master’s of Public Administration in Emergency and Disaster Management go on to having careers in various sectors of city, state and federal government including, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the Center for Public Health and Preparedness, to name a few.
