Bronx Campus Will Transform College and Local Communities
Bronx, N.Y. (August 23, 2016) – In a ribbon cutting ceremony to be attended by College officials, students, alumni, community leaders and elected officials, Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) will officially open its new Bronx campus, at 463 East 149th Street. The new campus is the anchor of Triangle Plaza Hub, a new, mixed commercial project that is at the heart of redevelopment in the South Bronx, an economically distressed area that is rebounding after decades of decline.
“The MCNY Bronx campus was designed with students and the greater community in mind,” said MCNY President Dr. Vinton Thompson. “It is my hope that the new site will serve as a magnet and its benefits will extend beyond our students to area residents.”
The MCNY Bronx center is a new 26,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility that has the capacity to serve over 500 students and solidifies MCNY’s footprint in the Bronx. The new campus features seventeen classrooms, three computer labs and a multipurpose conference space that will allow the college to host large events, making the campus an integral part of the local community, and providing opportunities for MCNY students to interact with neighborhood organizations.
“I am very proud of this beautiful facility – for the fact that it has created economic opportunities, educational and social services,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.
The facility will create permanent jobs for faculty members, administrators and support staff. MCNY will also help to contribute to the development of the South Bronx workforce as graduates from neighboring areas work in and invest in their own community.
“The opening of MCNY Bronx will demonstrate our long-term commitment to the South Bronx and its renaissance. The new space will establish a strong community presence that is truly transformational for a college of our size and history,” Dr. Thompson added.
