Mercedes Melendez, Director, MCNY Bronx Extension Center

Bronx, N.Y. (September 26, 2016) –Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) named Ms. Mercedes Melendez, Director of the MCNY Bronx Extension Center.  Melendez is a veteran MCNY administrator, having recently completed her thirteenth year as Administrative Director, supporting both administrative and instructional initiatives across the college.

“Mercedes will be at the heart of MCNY’s efforts to ensure that our Bronx center, not only serves students and faculty but also becomes a center for the community,” said MCNY President Dr. Vinton Thompson. “Based on her excellent work as Administrative Director and her profound commitment to the College, I look forward to her success.” he added.

Melendez has created effective learning environments for MCNY students through prudent management of facilities and security operations.  She has overseen and directed innumerable construction, relocation and space planning projects. Most recently Melendez oversaw the most complex moving and furnishing projects in the history of the College — the campus moves to 60 West Street in Manhattan and 463 East 149th Street in the Bronx.

Before she came to MCNY, Melendez worked as Director of Operations for the American Friends of Tel Aviv University and Development Manager for the Jewish Home and Hospital, following a long stint in international marketing, sales and project development at Estée Lauder.

As Director, she will take the helm of the Bronx Extension Center at a pivotal moment in its development.  The new facility has the largest publicly accessible assembly space in the Hub area of the Bronx and the capacity to host outside groups and large events. The space has already been used by community groups for assembly — most recently by SoBRO for their “18th Annual Business Opportunities Expo”.

“As MCNY raises its profile and builds a reputation for caring education and devotion to community service, the Bronx will be a growth center for the college,” Melendez said. “I am honored to have a major role in shaping this essential and strategic effort,” she added.

Melendez is an MCNY alumna (MPA, Public Administration ’07) and earned a BS summa cum laude from the Bronx’s Lehman College.
