New York, NY (February 27, 2025) — Metropolitan College of New York’s (MCNY) Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education has received a five-year initial accreditation for its teacher preparation programs from the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP).
Following a comprehensive self-study and peer review process, the AAQEP Accreditation Commission conferred accreditation at its February 18 meeting. This decision affirms that MCNY’s program, MSED – Dual Childhood Grades 1-6/Special Education meets all four AAQEP standards, demonstrating both high-quality completer performance and strong program practices.
“This national accreditation is a testament to MCNY’s commitment to preparing dedicated and highly skilled educators. Our Master of Science in Education programs have been shaping exceptional teachers for over 20 years, and the impact is felt in classrooms and communities across New York City.” Metropolitan College of New York’s President, Dr. Charles J. Gibbs, expressed his enthusiasm about this achievement, “The success of our alumni speaks volumes about the quality of this program, and we are incredibly proud of their contributions to the field of education.”
This accreditation comes on the heels of MCNY’s Master of Science in Education program celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of preparing teachers who are passionate about student success. Over the years, the program has produced outstanding educators who have gone on to serve in public, charter, and private schools throughout New York City, transforming lives through education.
Dr. Patrick Ianniello, Program Director for MCNY’s Master of Science in Education program, emphasized the program’s impact, “MCNY’s education graduates are among the most passionate, resilient, and effective teachers in education today. They enter the field ready to meet the challenges of making a real difference in the lives of students. This accreditation validates the strength of our program, faculty and commitment.”
MCNY’s teacher preparation programs equip aspiring educators with the knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience needed to excel in urban classroom settings. The programs emphasize Purpose-Centered Education, integrating theory with practice to prepare graduates who are both reflective practitioners and community leaders.
National accreditation from AAQEP ensures the quality and continuous improvement of professional educator preparation through a rigorous, non-governmental, evidence-based review process. The AAQEP model honors local context while fostering innovation and collaboration among institutions nationwide. AAQEP currently serves over 200 educator preparation providers across 35 states and territories.
