ABOUT THE POWER OF PURPOSE SOCIAL IMPACT AWARDS
The Power of Purpose Social Impact Awards were created in 2023 to shine a light on alums and leaders who live out Metropolitan College of New York’s mission of Purpose-Centered Education. That first luncheon at Manhatta set the stage for a tradition of celebrating purpose in action. We honored three extraordinary alumni whose work continues to shape New York City. Gary P. Jenkins, MCNY Board Chair and now Chief Administrative Officer of Urban Pathways, was recognized for his leadership and lifelong dedication to public service. Larry Scott Blackmon was celebrated for improving public health, expanding access to food, and creating greener, healthier neighborhoods. Dr. Jocelynne Rainey was honored for her leadership in the nonprofit sector and her commitment to advancing equity. It was a day filled with energy, pride, and the reminder that purpose is most powerful when it uplifts entire communities.
In 2024, the circle of honorees grew wider. David Schwartz, co-founder and principal of Slate Property Group, was recognized for his role in reshaping communities through real estate and development. Michael J. Garner, Chief Business Diversity Officer in the Mayor’s Office of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises, was honored for creating pathways of opportunity for diverse businesses across New York City. And Dr. Greta Strong, an MCNY alumna and Assistant Professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, was celebrated for her commitment to education and community health. On October 30, 2025, the third Social Impact Awards will return to Manhatta, hosted by Dr. Cheryl Wills, journalist, author, and longtime friend of MCNY. More than a luncheon, it will be a spirited afternoon of recognition, connection, and generosity. Proceeds will benefit the Together…We Rise Scholarship Campaign, which helps MCNY students — many balancing work, family, and study — turn determination into achievement and purpose into progress.
