The Master of Science Dual Childhood Grades 1-6/Special Education Grades 1-6 program leads to initial teacher certification in both Childhood Education (Grades 1–6) and Teaching Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6) along with successfully passing all the required New York State teacher certification exams. The required exams are: Educating All Students (201); CST Students with Disabilities (060); and, CST Multi-Subject Teachers of Childhood (221/222/245).

The demand for special education teachers has risen in recent years because many New York City school districts report problems finding adequate numbers of certified special education teachers. This graduate level degree features a 12-month 3- semester, or 16-month 4-semester, 46-credit program combining classwork, field experiences and student teaching to prepare candidates to be culturally-responsive teachers of students with mild to moderate disabilities.

This 16-month four-semester program schedule is designed for teaching assistants and  paraprofessionals who work full-time in NYC elementary schools, or others who may have jobs with flexible hours. Semester 2 requires 120 hours of field experiences. Semester 3 and 4 each require 33 days (about seven weeks) of student teaching.
