Message from our Associate Dean of Human Services

Dear Students, Colleagues, and Community Partners,

I am honored to welcome you to the Audrey Cohen School for Human Services and Education at Metropolitan College of New York—home to our flagship Human Services program. Inspired by the visionary leadership of Audrey Cohen, our school remains steadfast in its mission to empower individuals through a model rooted in social justice, learning innovation, and purposeful action.

At the very heart of our Human Services program is a bold and unwavering commitment to cultivating the next generation of change makers, compassionate clinicians, and visionary community leaders. We believe that true learning doesn’t end in the classroom—it begins there and extends out into the world. That’s why our courses are carefully and passionately designed to bridge the gap between theory and action, empowering students not only to master key concepts but to apply their knowledge directly within the communities they serve.

This integration of academic excellence with real-world application is what sets us apart. Our students engage with complex social issues, develop practical problem-solving skills, and grow into leaders who are ready to make an immediate and lasting impact. Every assignment, every discussion, and every project is intentionally aligned with our mission of advancing social justice and equity.

We are especially proud of our diverse and dynamic faculty, whose professional backgrounds span mental health, youth development, social policy, criminal justice, nonprofit leadership, and more. Their lived experience and academic expertise create a vibrant learning environment where innovation thrives and every voice matters. Together, they deliver a curriculum that is not only academically rigorous but deeply relevant, experiential, and transformative preparing our students to thrive in today’s evolving human services landscape.

We are proud to offer a hybrid learning model that supports the diverse needs of our students. This approach blends the flexibility of online learning with the power of in-person engagement, creating a learning environment that is both accessible and deeply immersive. Grounded in experiential learning, our programs are structured to help students grow personally and professionally building the skills, confidence, and insight necessary to lead transformative change.

As we continue to evolve, we remain committed to fostering a space where learning is a catalyst for justice, equity, and impact. Whether you are just beginning your journey or continuing your education, we are here to support you every step of the way.

With purpose and gratitude,
Dr. Marcella Pizzo, Ph.D., LMHC

It all begins with MCNY’s unique Purpose-Centered Education model

It combines classroom instruction with applied knowledge and practice. During each semester or “purpose,” you take what you’ve learned and apply it to the real world—whether it’s as a resident teacher in a local school or through a Constructive Action® (CA) project. In your CA, you’ll identify a real need or opportunity in an organization or community then propose a solution that addresses it.

Our graduates are socially responsible, contributing members of our global community who go on to make a name for themselves in their profession—and a difference in the lives of many.
